Dental Insurance Dental Care, Crown is hurting me after three years latter.

I had a dental crown put on one of my back teeth three years ago. I have dental insurance but back then I paid for the crown out of my pocket. Now my crown seems to hurt whenever I drink something cold or eat ice cream.
I get this shooting pain on the tooth with the crown. I got a cheap metal crown at the time because that was what I could afford. Is that why I am having pain issues. I have insurance now will they give me coverage for a new crown? Not sure what to do. Advise please.
